We aim to facilitate physiological relief in the form of deep relaxation and meditation by using a fully immersive virtual reality platform to deliver enhanced guided audiovisual content.

The content is crafted to induce a parasympathetic nervous system response through the following processes:

  • Auditory binaural brainwave entrainment
  • Guided meditation voice track
  • Breath reduction techniques (pranayama)
  • Intense mental focus
  • Use of colour
  • Visual relaxation queues
  • Auditory relaxation queues

High quality holographic stereo audio of deeply relaxing soundscapes, combined with binaural tone frequencies guide the user on an auditory journey while procedural immersive VR visuals dance hypnotically all around them, driven in version one by user preferences, then in version two by the user's own biofeedback data such as heart and breath rate, brainwave frequency response and blood pressure, creating a unique and personalised experience.

Technical breakdown

Phase one is simply high quality audiovisual content able to be downloaded to a mobile device or streamed directly from the internet for viewing in any number of available personal VR headsets such as the Samsung VR Gear, Occulus Rift, or Google cardboard.

Phase two will be a hardware independent mobile application that runs on the unity game engine platform. The app is accessed via the VR Gear, Occulus Rift or similar personal virtual reality headset. User biofeedback is sent to the app vie an eMotive headset and a mobile device based bio metric sensor array.

Creative breakdown

Phase one

The creative scope for phase one of the project will be 6 x 15 minute guided meditations. Each of these will represent one type of meditation technique from the following:

Creative guided visualisation
Be guided on a journey through your mind's eye, visualising imagery suggested by a guided voice track.

Mindfulness meditation
Practice expanding your awareness to include all the senses at once.

Yoga Nidra
A bodyscan meditation to develop and strenghten the bodymind connection and to relax and release physical stress.

Cakra opening meditation
Awaken the kundalini energy in the spine to balance and open the 7 main cakras of the energetic body.

Sense withdrawal
Turn your awareness within and discover the amazing world of subtle conscious experience that exists within your own being.

Deep meditation
Take a binaural journey into a deep yet wakeful meditative state and experience pure consciousness by listening to a powerful healing group Om.

Phase two

The user will be able to select and combine the soundscape track, visuals and guided voice tracks of their choice into a personalised journey. Many combinations exist for variation and personalisation of experience.

Visuals may include:

  • Evolving fluid mandala

  • Earth from low orbit

Guided meditations may include:

  • Metta - Universal compassion meditation
  • Indra's Net - Universal connection meditation
  • Cakra opening meditation
  • Mindfulness - focused awareness meditation
  • Yoga Nidra - deep relaxation/healing meditation

Development agreement

This project is a creative collaboration between Bevan Lynch (Sydney) and Duncan Ransom representing The Endless Collective (New York). It is currently a not for profit research and development prototype.

The Endless Collective will advise on the setup of a VR unit for pipeline research and development and reviewing work in progress and final output. Bevan will design and produce audio content for phase one of the project.
Phase two development is currently outside the scope of this proposal.

Budget

As this is essentially a self funded research prototype, I would like to keep the budget as low as possible.

Volunteer partners

I would love to invite anyone who is able to be a part of the project on a volunteer basis to please do so. Parts of the process will be a lot of fun and may generate some exposure by showcasing your work.  Working with the intention of healing for others is a rewarding goal.

Rights and intellectual property

As applies generally in the production of creative works the client commissions, finances and owns the final work distribution rights, and the artist owns the processes used in the creation of the work.

The copyright to final output of audio and visuals and the app itself as a product remains with the commissioning entity (The Endless Collective).

Any rights or intellectual property regarding the technical aspects of production, RND undertaken to produce the work, or processes invented in order to produce the work remain with the producer of the work.

The Endless Collective reserves the right to engage in commercial licensing agreements and for-profit arrangements from phase two onward.
